The Dangers of UV Light - Ultraviolet Rays and Your Eyes
Ultraviolet light or radiation (UV) can be very damaging to your eyes. UV rays are the same ones that damage and age your skin and they can cause very serious long term damage to your eyes unless you have proper protection. These days, sunglasses can block 99-100% of all UVA and UVB rays (the harmful ones).
UV rays can damage both the eyes surface and the interior of your eyes such as the retina. Studies have suggested that prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause a condition known as macular degeneration which causes damage to the retina and is the biggest cause of blindness in Americans over 55.
Ultraviolet rays affect everyone, regardless of age and therefore everyone must take steps to reduce their impact. Those at highest risk are people who experience prolonged periods in sunlight. UV rays are also reflected off surfaces such as snow, sand and water so fishing, boasting or visitors to the beach also face an increased risk. The worst times of day are 10am to 3pm and understandably the risk is higher in the summer time.
Ultraviolet rays pose a serious danger to your eyes but fortunately, the solution is very simple and cost effective. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat will reduce your exposure to UV rays and eyewear featuring UV protection can often absorb 100% of UV rays and is the best protective measure, especially if the eyewear is of a wrap around style, giving full protection all over the eye region.
